Frequently asked questions

Project 1600 is not affiliated with the College Board. SAT® is a registered trademark of the College Board, which was not involved in producing this site and does not endorse it. This is an independent study resource.

Is Project 1600 really free?

Yes. The entire question bank is free, with no paywall. You do not need an account to use it.

Do I need an account?

No. Every question and explanation is open to anyone. An optional free account exists only to save your practice progress so it follows you across devices. Without an account, your progress is still saved on the device you are using.

How does progress tracking work?

When you answer a question, the site records whether you got it right on your first try. That builds the stats on your Progress page — how many questions you have done, your first-try accuracy, and a breakdown by section. If you create an account, that progress syncs across devices; if not, it stays in your browser.

Are these official SAT questions?

No. Every question here was written independently by Project 1600 to practice the same skills the SAT tests. They are modeled on the format and skill categories of the digital SAT, but they are original practice questions, not real or retired test items, and they are not provided or approved by the College Board.

How accurate are the questions and answers?

We work hard to keep them correct and to mirror the real test's style, and the math is checked by computer. Even so, this is an independent project and errors are possible. If you spot one, treat the official College Board materials as the authority.

What is the "trap" idea?

On the SAT, wrong answers are not random — each is engineered to look right in a specific way. Every explanation here names the most tempting wrong answer (the "trap") and shows exactly how it was built to fool you, because learning the traps is what makes the test predictable. See the Method page for more.

Who makes Project 1600?

It is an independent project built by two high-scoring students, created to make high-quality SAT practice open to anyone, not just those who can afford a tutor.
